Chapter Sixteen

Easton

I resisted the urge to push Lyric behind me since I knew she wouldn’t appreciate the protection. Slavik was at her other side in an instant and gave me a look over her head. I lifted my chin and knew that though Lyric could take care of herself, she wouldn’t have to. The pirate king and I would keep her safe.

And if she heard those thoughts, she’d probably hit me with her Wielding herself.

A few other Earth Wielders came up behind us, while Slavik barked out orders to his team.

Our crew came up on our other side.

“They were hunting something, and it’s coming at us now,” I informed our group.

“It’s a gorgon,” Slavik snapped.

I closed my eyes and let out a breath. “You’re serious?”

“Why would I joke about a giant gorgon trying to kill us?”

“Isn’t a gorgon like Medusa?” Lyric asked, confusion in her tone.

The trees in front of us swayed as if something substantial moved through them, coming after us.

Rhodes answered. “In the human realm, the stories of the Greek being with the head of snakes was a gorgon, yes, but the gorgons here? It’s sort of a mix of that and the worst terror you could ever think of.”

“So, it’s not one of the good guys, then,” Lyric said with sarcasm, but I knew she was just trying to relieve the tension since all of us were running on no sleep and constant fear.

“You’ll just have to wait and see what it looks like as it tries to strip the meat from our bones,” Wyn answered, her Earth Wielding rumbling beneath her feet. Slavik looked over at her and gave her an appreciative glance. Teagan and Rhodes both glared at him, and I pushed that observation back.

I’d have to deal with whatever was happening with my seconds in command later. For now, I needed to keep Lyric alive because none of us had been expecting a gorgon.

Finally, it came through the trees, and I sucked in a breath.

It was almost the size of the hundred-year-old trees, its body made of stone. It had the head of a bull with horns longer than seven feet.

Its body was that of a bull’s, as well, though it had scales running down its back and what looked like what once might’ve been wings etched into the stone.

It had snakes around its head, the one nod to the human realm’s version of Medusa—that and the fact that it was stone itself.

The problem was that, much like the basilisk Lyric had told me they fought, if it looked you in the eyes for too long, you were dead—turned to stone with no way to come back.

“Don’t look it directly in the eyes.”

Lyric looked down and cursed. “How are we supposed to fight it, then?”

“You drown it, burn it, bury it, or slam it to the ground repeatedly with your Air,” the pirate king said simply, even though there was nothing simple about what he’d said.

“Okay, then. Let’s do this.” Lyric paused. “Is it just one of them, or do they travel in packs? Or herds.
